The ocean has recently become a big source of interest for me; the extreme changing colors, rhythmic and calm movements, and the creatures that inhabit the ocean are all factors that fuel my creative process. Through my watercolor underwater seascapes, layered on top with delicate yet expressive colored pencil details, I seek to create extraordinarily colorful ocean work that is encapsulating and dynamic.
Watercolor allows me to explore the fluidity of water itself, blending vibrant hues of purples, blues and greens that echo the natural gradients of the sea. Additionally I can capture the rays of light coming from the surface of the water that shines down onto the sea life below. The addition of colored pencil brings in texture and definition, highlighting the intricate patterns of the sea life and plants that inhabit the ocean. This combination of media allows me to balance spontaneity of color with fun sealife details, reflecting the fun and unique aspects of the ocean compared to what we normally experience on land.
My work is not just about depicting a scene, it’s about evoking a feeling. I want my art to be an adventure, to see all the colors and shapes included in the ocean. I want viewers to feel as though they themselves are underwater exploring in a child-like wondrous way. I want my work to distract you even if it is only just for a moment. Each piece is an invitation to pause, breathe, and connect with the uniqueness of an underwater ocean world.
